Overview

The Sham Valley Trek travels through the Sham region, in the lower part of Ladakh, and is also referred to as the “baby trek” of Ladakh. The trip can be completed at any time of the year and is a wonderful way to learn about the communities and the Ladakhi people’s way of life. The journey begins in Likir and travels from there to Hemis Shukpachen at a height of 3700 metres. The Phobe La at 3580 metres, Mebtak La at 3750 metres, and Tsermangchen La situated at 3750 metres upholding a regular elevation, upholding a few highland drifts along the way, making it attractive for beginners and boosting family adventure activities in Ladakh.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrive at Leh

Reach Leh and spend the rest of the day exploring around. Overnight stay in Leh. Altitude : 11,150 ft.

Day 2 : Drive to Likir; Trek to Phobe La

Altitude :12,073 ft. via 12,171 ft at pass, Distance: 9 km We go for Likir after breakfast; the distance is around 58 kilometres. This is the starting point of our journey. The day is brief and very simple, as it travels across the breathtaking passes of Phobe La and Chagatse La. We also trek past the quaint little village of Sumdo, from where the path to Chagatse La opens up. Once through the pass, the Yangthang village awaits us, and is our campsite for the night, right beside a gurgling stream. Sleep to the mellifluous sounds of the surrounding beauty.

Day 3 Trek from Yangthang to Hemis Shukpachan via Tsermangchan La

Altitude : 11,900 ft. via 12,715 ft. at pass ,Distance : 10 km The trail is easy and gradual, over the mild incline. We begin trekking northwards, and soon the trail descends to cross a small stream. From here, the ascent to Tsermangchan La begins, over a gentle slope. Once across the pass, we start rising once more to one of the most picturesque Ladakhi settlements, Hemis Shukpachan. Admire the flowing streams and vast fields of barley that lie in store for you, providing a splash of greens in contrast to the sturdy mountains that surround you.

Day 4 : Trek from Hemis Shukpachan to Ang via Mebtak La

Altitude : 12,303 ft.,Distance : 10 km Another short, easy day as we begin an uphill climb, which soon swerves south. The trail becomes steep and ascends to Mebtak La at 3,750 m, where many Tibetan prayer flags can be seen fluttering. The trek now follows a descend, right up to Ang village, above of sweeping apricot orchards. Camp overnight at Ang.

Day 5 : Trek from Ang to Temisgam and Nurla

Altitude : 9,977 ft.,Distance : 8 km trek The final day of our walk takes a track that descends until it reaches Temisgam's main road, where cars will be waiting to take you back to Leh.
